Recent Exhibitions & Reflections

I visited a group show at Electro Studios in St Leonards, run by Turps Banana, an artist-led mentoring programme. Twenty-five artists featured—standouts included Shona McGovern, Sharon McPhee and Jo Mason. It was impressive to reconnect with this space, which I knew from my Elephant & Castle days.

Earlier in March, I participated with my MA peers at Electro Studios—the first proper post-lockdown show. The private view was Mar 1, with the exhibition on Mar 2–3.

I also attended “Women in Revolt! – Women in Activism 1970–1990” at Tate Britain. A fantastic, overdue survey of feminist art across multiple mediums. Highly recommended if you haven’t seen it.

Looking Ahead

Upcoming group show Swap Shop at Cake Room, Hastings (PV June 14, 6–8 pm), where 14 artists partner up and creatively respond to each other’s work.

Summer shows include another group exhibition at Cake Room in October (Do You See What I Sea, PV Oct 20), a December solo pop-up at Priory Meadow, and a large biro‑drawing collection later in the year—watch for Jeff the studio‑cat’s paw‑prints!

Recent Highlights & Recommendations

Frank Auerbach's charcoal exhibition at the Courtauld Gallery blew me away—the texture, depth, and collage-like layering make these showpieces his most powerful works. On until end‑May.

Jude Montague’s “Spirit of Invention Festival” celebrating John Logie Baird ran early May at Electro Studios; I may be taking part. Also, a Korean solo show by Yun‑Hung Keun with monumentally calm pigment pillars is a must-see.

Studio News

In‑studio: prepping canvases for In Harm’s Way (September show), biro drawings collection, and a highlight piece: Contagion currently showing at Hastings Art Forum (until Sept 17).

I’ve interviewed Anne Lydiat and Alison Claire France—fellow drawing‑focused artists—finding their mark‑making approach especially resonant.
