Hoover, alongside fellow gang member Andrew Howard, was convicted of murdering 19-year-old drug dealer William "Pooky" Young in 1973 and was sentenced to a term of 150 to 200 years imprisonment. News emerged on Wednesday (28 May) that Larry Hoover Sr, who co-founded the Chicago street gang the Gangster Disciples, was to have his prison sentence commuted by US president Trump.
Following the announcement, Hoover’s son Hoover Jr thanked West, also known as Ye, crediting the rapper and his ex-wife Kim Kardashian, for putting him in touch with Alice Marie Johnson who he referred to as the “pardon czar”.
President Trump on Wednesday commuted the sentence of notorious former Chicago street gang leader Larry Hoover, who was serving multiple life sentences in federal prison.
Hoover, 74, the co-founder of the Chicago gang Gangster Disciples, was already serving a 200-year sentence on state charges in Illinois for the 1973 murder of 19-year-old neighborhood drug dealer William "Pooky" Young, when he was convicted of federal charges in 1997, and sentenced to six life terms.
Hoover was among 39 Gangster Disciples leaders indicted in August 1995 in Operation Headache, a six-year effort by the feds to infiltrate Gangster Disciples. Federal prosecutors had accused him of leading a criminal enterprise to continue overseeing the gang while in prison in Illinois
Hoover is currently serving six life sentences in a maximum security prison in Colorado, according to federal prison records.
It's unclear how soon he will be released from federal custody, but he still faces the remainder of his 200-year sentence in Illinois, dating back to 1973 for Young's murder.
Hoover's attorneys said he has spent nearly 30 years in solitary confinement at ADX Florence, a maximum security prison in Colorado that they described as "the most restrictive, draconian supermax prison in the United States.
In a statement, Hoover's attorneys, Jennifer Bonjean and Justin Moore, said they are "thrilled" to see he will be released from federal custody.
"The Courts have demonstrated a complete unwillingness to consider Mr. Hoover's considerable growth and complete rehabilitation. Despite the Court's unwillingness to do the right thing, Mr. Hoover has been able to keep his voice alive through the incredible work of many advocates and supporters. Thankfully, Mr. Hoover's pleas were heard by President Trump who took action to deliver justice for Mr. Hoover."
"Just thrilled for him, thrilled for his family, thrilled for his supporters — who have been chanting, 'Free Larry Hoover!' for a long time," Bonjean added in a follow-up interview.
Bonjean also represented Hoover when he was up for parole on his state sentence in 2022 and was denied.
"He is eligible for resentencing, but the courts have been unwilling to give him that opportunity — notwithstanding the fact that he has literally done every single thing a human being could do to show that they have been rehabilitated," said Bonjean.
In 1993, Hoover spoke to former CBS News Chicago reporter John Davis. At the time, Hoover was 42 years old and had already served 20 years in prison.
"I've done my time," Hoover said in the 1993 interview. "I paid my debt to society."

Grand Theft Auto VI is an action-adventure game set within an open world Its fictional U.S. state of Leonida—based on Florida—includes Vice City, Grassrivers, and the Leonida Keys, based on Miami, the Everglades, and the Florida Keys, respectively; as well as Ambrosia, Mount Kalaga National Park, and Port Gellhorn. The game world parodies 2020s American culture, with satirical depictions of social media and influencer culture, and references to internet memes such as Florida man.
The story follows a criminal duo: Jason Duval, who worked for local drugrunners after his time in the Army; and Lucia Caminos, the serie's first non-optional female protagonist, who was imprisoned at Leonida Penitentiary after fighting for her family in Liberty City. Following a failed bank robbery, they encounter a state-wide conspiracy and are forced to protect each other. Other characters include: Cal Hampton, Jason's paranoid friend; Boobie Ike, who runs a business empire in Vice City; Dre'Quan Priest, owner of the record label Only Raw Records with Boobie; Bae-Luxe and Roxy, a musical duo signed to Only Raw as Real Dimez; Raul Bautista, a seasoned bank robber; and Brian Heder, a drugrunner and Jason's landlord.
One of the most exciting revelations is that GTA 6 will return players to Vice City, Rockstar’s fictional version of Miami. This sun-soaked, neon-lit setting hasn’t been seen since 2002’s Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and fans are eager to experience it reimagined with modern graphics and gameplay mechanics.
Early footage and leaks suggest the world will be larger and more dynamic than anything Rockstar has ever built. The map could include surrounding rural areas, swamps, and even portions inspired by the Florida Keys.
For the first time in the franchise’s history, GTA 6 will feature a female protagonist. Named Lucia, she is one half of a modern-day Bonnie and Clyde-style duo, alongside a character named Jason. This dual-protagonist setup might offer a story-driven experience similar to GTA V, but with a deeper narrative focus and evolving character arcs.
Rockstar appears to be leaning into storytelling more than ever before, with reports suggesting more grounded, emotional narratives—without losing the satirical edge the series is known for.
GTA 6 is being developed exclusively for next-generation consoles (PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S). This means Rockstar can fully harness the power of these systems, offering:
Vast, living cities with dynamic NPC behavior
Real-time weather and destructible environments
Enhanced physics and AI systems
Seamless loading and transitions between areas
Expect longer draw distances, more detailed models, and smoother gameplay than anything we've seen in previous GTA titles.
As of now, Rockstar has only confirmed a 2025 release window. Based on their history, a fall release is most likely—think October or November 2025. Of course, delays are always possible with a game of this scale, but Rockstar tends to prioritize quality and polish above all.
GTA Online became a phenomenon in its own right, and it’s almost certain that GTA 6 will come with a new iteration of GTA Online, possibly with deeper role-playing features, more cooperative gameplay, and a more seamless integration with the single-player experience.
There’s also speculation that Rockstar could adopt a live service model, with continuous updates, evolving missions, and regular map expansions—more akin to Fortnite or Warzone than traditional DLC packs.
GTA 6 isn’t just a sequel—it’s a cultural moment in the making. With over 185 million copies sold of GTA V, Rockstar has immense pressure to deliver something that redefines open-world gaming once again. Based on early looks and Rockstar’s track record, they just might do it.
This isn’t just another video game launch. It’s the start of a new era for one of gaming’s most iconic franchises.
